1. Have you ever stopped and wondered whether your opinions are truly yours?

Or do you simply accept certain ideas because the people around you believe them?

Here’s a simple question: Do you read the comments on a reel or short before you finish watching it?
If your answer is yes, this article might be for you.

We live in a time where opinions are everywhere. Social media, podcasts, influencers, AI tools, news channels, and comment sections constantly tell us what to think. As a result, many people are slowly losing the habit of thinking for themselves.

Instead of forming their own conclusions, they borrow conclusions from others. They repeat arguments they heard in a podcast, share opinions they saw online, and defend beliefs they never took the time to examine.

The problem is not that information is available. The problem is us becoming comfortable with not thinking at all.

People are taught what to think, not how to think.
The world wants you to do and to listen, and not to speak.

Author’s note: Independent thinking is not a talent that some people are born with. It is a skill. And like every skill, it takes time to develop.
The good news is that you can practice it.

Where to begin

The next time you read an article, watch a video, or learn something new, resist the urge to immediately check what everyone else thinks about it.
Instead, sit with it for a few minutes.

Write down:

At first, it will feel uncomfortable.

You may stare at a blank page and realize you have no idea what you think. That is normal. In fact, that moment is important because it shows you are finally doing the work yourself instead of borrowing someone else’s answer.

Do not give up when the page stays blank.
Keep asking questions. Keep observing. Keep writing.

You do not need to have a perfectly articulated opinion.
You do not need to be right every time.

Thinking for yourself is not about always reaching the correct answer. It is about having the courage to examine ideas before accepting them.

People may disagree with your conclusions, and that’s okay.

The goal is not to think differently just for the sake of being different.
The goal is to think honestly.

Because in a world full of borrowed opinions, an original thought is becoming a rare thing.
