Myself

Pronoun
UK /maɪˈself/
US /maɪˈself/

Definition

Used to refer back to “I” or to show emphasis.

Example

"I taught myself to cook by practicing simple recipes again and again."

"I reminded myself to stay patient when things became stressful."

"I wrote this poem myself."

Explanation

Myself means the same person (me) who does an action and also receives it. For example, “I hurt myself while cooking”, meaning I did it to my own body. It is a reflexive pronoun, used when the subject and object are the same person (means I do something to me), like “I taught myself to cook”. It can also show emphasis in two ways:

  • Emphasis on who did the action: “I fixed it myself!” This means I did it, not another person.
  • Emphasis on doing the action alone (with “by”): “I did it by myself”, meaning I did it alone, without any help from anyone.

It helps make sentences clear and strong when talking about your own actions.
