Lie
Definition
(n): A false statement.
Example
"(v) : Please don’t lie; tell me what really happened at school today."
"(v) : She lay on the grass to relax after a long walk."
"(n) : She told a lie about her profession."
Explanation
Lie can have two different meanings. As a verb meaning to not tell the truth, it shows saying something false. For example, he lied about doing his homework. (Here, lied is the past tense.) As a noun, a lie is a false statement, like that was a lie. Lie also means to rest in a flat position. For example, she lies on the sofa when she is tired. For this meaning, the verb forms are different from “lied”: lay is the past tense (“Yesterday she lay on the bed to relax”), and lain is the past participle used with has/have (“She has lain there for hours because she is very tired”).
